Volleyball gets two playoff wins

by Ashley Hertwig
With the regular season over, the Maple Lake High School volleyball team went into their first playoff game on Thursday, October 28, with a different mindset: knowing they had to beat the Becker Bulldogs or the 2010 season would be over.
Having defeated Becker earlier in the season, the Irish were trying not to be too confident when they gained an early lead in the first game. However, when they came out of the first game with a 25-16 win, they couldn’t help but be excited.
The second game was much like the first. Maple Lake made smart plays, causing the Bulldogs to run all over the court. Game two ended with a score of 25-18 in favor of the Irish.
Two games down, the Irish were looking for one more win that would put them into the next round of playoffs. The Bulldogs sensed the end was near as the Irish began to dominate the court and won the third game 25-11.
Beating the Bulldogs put the Irish one step closer toward a trip to the state tournament, as did a win against Zimmerman on Monday, Nov. 1. The statistics for that match were not available at Messenger press time and a full report will appear in next week’s paper.
The Irish will be battling it out against Mora on Thursday, Nov. 4, at St. Michael-Albertville as a neutral site.
Against Becker, Shelby Rachel and Sami Knott led the team in kills, both with a total of eight. Brooke Decker had a total of 26 set assists, and Lexi Pingel went 100% for her serves, and also led the team with 14 digs.
