Volleyball celebrates 2010 success

Players, coaches, and parents of the 2010 Irish volleyball program gathered at the Maple Lake American Legion on Sunday, November 14, to remember a great season.
The banquet began at 5:45 p.m. with people piling through the doors to get a plate full of food and to socialize before the awards started.
While everyone finished their meals, Head Coach Marty Kiebel stepped up to the podium to begin the ceremony. “They asked how long this banquet would be, and I said don’t make any plans,” he joked.
After a short introduction, Kiebel passed the microphone onto C-team Coach Leah Davis who recognized each member of the team and congratulated them on their 14-9 record.
Coach Kiebel then talked about the records that were broken this season. Brooke Decker, who broke the school record for set assists last year, shattered her old record of 633 set assists with a new record of 699. She also has 1,619 career set assists which is currently the school record which she will continue to add to next season. Lexi Pingel broke the school record of 288 digs in a season when she made 348.
Kiebel gave out awards to the 200, 300, and 400 point club members, then let Coach Amy Voight talk about the JV team’s record of 7-13, and how they all “found their voices.”
The All-State Academic team was named, and with an average GPA of 3.69, the team earned the silver award from the state.
The varsity team was up next. With eight brand new starters over the course of the season, an overall record of 22-8 was outstanding.
They moved onto the awards. There was a tie for most improved between Dani Hudek and Jenny Puncochar. The “Go” award was given to Lexi Pingel, and along with that award, Pingel also received the serving award for being 92% for serves and 48% for aces. Shelby Rachel was named Player of the Year.
Second Team All-Conference awards were given to Pingel and Sami Knott, and First Team All-Conference were awarded to Decker and Rachel.
First year letter winners included: Rachel Latour, Dani Hudek, Emalee Bryant, Carissa Knott, Sydney Knudsen, Jenny Puncochar, and Jacki Holm. Second year letter winners: Shelby Rachel, Sami Knott, and Lexi Pingel; and third year letter winner: Brooke Decker.
As the banquet came to a close, Kiebel mentioned that with no seniors, the whole team would be returning. “Next season 2011, we can now think about 2011,” he said.
